“This man is truly a coach’s quarterback”, noted an observer of Brad Dement, a first year quarterback with the Tempe Rams last year. During his first year in the league he definitely turned some heads, as his knowledge of the game and ability to lead a team assisted the Tempe Rams.
Born in Beloit, Wisconsin, 75 miles southwest of Milwaukee, he played high school football four years at Beloit Memorial High School. Quarterbacked all four years and even found time to play baseball for two years, lettering in both sports.
After graduating in 1998, he headed off to Carroll University, Waukesha, WI. After two years of football for the “Pioneers”, he took time off to earn some money, working at Wauwatosa High School , just west of Milwaukee, as an OF coordinator for their varsity squad.
As the economy took a turn downwards, he too looked elsewhere for employment, finding his way to the Valley of the Sun, where he obtained employment as a PE/Health teacher in the Cartwright School District.
Back in Wisconsin, he had time to continue playing in an adult football league, know as the Ironman Football League. After relocating to Arizona he joined the AzFl where he played for the Chandler Cowboys. “Had a grand time there, except I got my jaw broken the first year, but then came back the second year to win the league championship,” Dement noted.
League owner, Ron Fennern noted that, "Bradley is a perfect example of how you would want your son to be, bright, confident, well educated, hard working, polite and humble. A true leader by example, on and off the field."
Currently Brad is the quarterback and DB coach for the Westview High School “Knights” in the west valley. “I love working with kids, teaching them what I know about the game. Working for Coach Jeff Bowen at Westview is a privilege and truly a great experience for me,” Dement added.
“In five years, I hope to be still playing and coaching football. Playing until I can no longer contribute to my team’s efforts to win, or until my wheels fall off, “ he said with a smile.
“My dad was a hard working man, and from him and my mom, I learned that just working hard is not enough, you have to know what you are doing. That’s what I try to do everyday,” Dement summarized.
Well sir, you have learned from your mom and dad very well. From our observations of your skills on the field, you have a lot more to offer this league. Thanks for being here, and we hope to see you again for the 2010 season. |
