Kareem Khalile a 19 year old Defensive Back for the Phoenix Outlaws was injured in the opening game of the 2010 season Saturday January 16th at Moon Valley High School. Just six and a half minutes into the opening game, Khalile’s football season ended. The 6’0” 195 lb cornerback from Corona del Sol High School came up to make a tackle on a sweep and caught a knee to the side of the helmet, leaving him lying motionless on the field.
The Phoenix Outlaws Cornerback is continuing to make steady progress in physical therapy after suffering a spinal cord injury on January 16th and surgery to remove a vertebrae. Kareem has regained some movement in all extremities including his hands. He is able to feed himself now. The staff at St Josephs is providing excellent care, and expects that Kareem will have another 3 to 5 weeks of rehabilitation, before he is released. He still has a long way to go and a lot of work to do.
The league gave his family another check for $1,000.00 from the donations that have come in. Kareem needs our financial help. The cost of his surgery was 128,000.00, his rehabilitation will probably be more than that. The deductables left after what the insurance may possibly pay will still leave a significant debt. Kareem and his family are very thankful for the support they have received from the league. We need to do more! On March 27th the league will host Kareem Kahlile day and will hold a silent auction with all the proceeds going directly to Kareem. Some of the items offered at the auction will be official NFL footballs signed by Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald.
Anyone who has something to donate that we can auction off please contact me at info@copperfootball.com or ronfennern@yahoo.com.
Another season ending injury occured on the second half kickoff Feb 6th to Jesse Black #73 from the Northern Arizona Coyotes. Jessie dislocated his knee and broke his tibia in the game against the Outlaws. The injury will require surgery, which is scheduled for Tuesday Feb 16th, he will have a long rehab process after that. Jesse played linebacker for Roy HS in Roy, Utah and tight end and DE for the Desert Dragons of the Utah Football league. Jesee works for the Camp Verde sanitary district, is married and has two daughters. Best wishes and a quick recovery Jesse and we look forward to seeing you back on the field next year.
